Since the late twentieth century, the number of nanomedicines has increased exponentially. Prior to the nanotechnology revolution, advances in disease treatments were associated with the discovery and synthesis of new therapeutic molecules. In the framework of the nanotechnology revolution, many of these advances are linked to the discovery and assembly of new supramolecular structures of nanoscopic dimensions, which allow the transformation of extremely fragile biomolecules or toxic synthetic molecules into high-efficient nanopharmaceuticals
The arrival in clinical practice of nanomedicine, initially developed in academic research environments, is being carried out in open innovation models, in which public-private collaboration and the role of emerging companies (start-ups) is key.
This session is organized by the Science and Technology Section of the IEC.
Nora Ventosa is Chemical Engineer by the Institut Químic de Sarrià (IQS) and Doctor by the Universitat Ramon Llull. She is Research Scientist at the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC). She is co-leader of the NANOMOL group, assigned to the TECNIO network, which includes the main centers and agents involved in technology transfer in Catalonia.
After last year’s party being cancelled due to the COVID pandemic, we were stoked to be able to finally celebrate again! The 2021 ICMAB Party was celebrated after more than a year without live events due to the collective efforts to stop the spread of COVID. The party was not without changes, as it was celebrated entirely at ICMAB’s terrace to avoid concentrations of people inside. We celebrated on 16 July 2021 with many events, including the first CRYSTALMATCH contest, the awards ceremony for the FOTICMAB contest, the BEFORE&NOW photo activity, a tie dye workshop by Sara Ruiz, Nerea González and Lídia Ballell, a sketching workshop by Alejandro Santos, and the final of the Tennis Table tournament!
The Institute was one of the four Materials Science CSIC Research Centers founded in 1986. This year is the 35th anniversary of the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona! It was put together in 1986 through the union of different research groups from different local institutions, all coming together in a singular building which was, on its own, a collaboration between the CSIC and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, who conceded some of its territory so the ICMAB could be built near the Centro Nacional de Microelectrónica (the Institute of Microelectronics of Barcelona (IMB-CNM)).
On 22 June 2021, from 4 to 6:30 pm, the SCN2 (Catalan Society of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology) will celebrate the second edition of the event 'Nanotechnology and Industry for PhD researchers'. The aim of the event is to talk about nanotechnology applied to the field of industry and business. This year the event counts with the participation of three spin-offs from ICN2, ICMAB and IMB-CNM: InBrain Neuroelectronics, Nanomol Technologies and Energiot, who will explain us their process of technology transfer.
