Strategic Managing Unit
Coming directly under Management, the Administration at the ICMAB is responsible for all of the administrative processes at the Institute, mainly general accounting, charging and payments and also the accounting of the different research projects. It is also responsible for the inventory, purchasing and public tenders. It takes responsibility for all of the tasks referring to personnel; recruitment and contracting. It also acts as an intermediary between travel agencies and personnel and takes care of reserving plane tickets, etc. and thus travel orders, expenses…
The communication & outreach office is a newly created department within the ICMAB. It supports the dissemination of the research activity and the impact of the work developed by the ICMAB community.
It has the following responsibilities:
Anna May Masnou, Head of Communication & Outreach Officer, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

The IT Service manages all the computer systems, the data network, internal software and the digital presence of the ICMAB, placing them at the service for the researchers and management staff.
The IT Service is formed by:
The objectives of the IT Service are:
The ICMAB´s Technology Transfer Unit was created on November 1997. Its mission is to collaborate with the ICMAB´s Managing Direction in the activities for the transference of the Centers research results with the aim of spreading and applying the scientific knowledge to the industry’s technological level improvement.
The library of the Materials Science Institute is specialized in Materials Science. It is part of the global CSIC Library Network, which joins a total of 90 specialized libraries distributed among 21 cities within 10 Autonomous Communities.
Library Collections: The library collection covers subject areas related to Material Science such as Physics, Chemistry and Crystallography. It has 1000 monographs and 105 periodic publication and, at present, subscribes to 60 periodical journals.
Users: The library is open to all ICMAB staff and other CSIC personnel and also other Research or Academic Centres dependent upon official organisms.
Services: Reading Room, access to own and external catalogues, data base searches, inter-library borrowing , personal borrowing.
The Strategic Managing Unit at ICMAB is responsible for the implementation of the funding obtained by the Institute. It plays a key role supporting our researchers in the preparation, submission and reporting of local, national and European grants. In close collaboration with ICMAB’s governing bodies and the other available Units, it promotes a continuous development strategy to position ICMAB as one of the leading European Research Centres in Materials Science. Among its main objectives, the Unit is responsible for the constant search for new funding opportunities focusing on the strategic and innovation objectives of our Severo Ochoa award FUNMAT ("Functional Materials for Social Grand Challenges", 2016-2019) with the aim of enhancing ICMAB's scientific excellence. The Unit keeps always an open-minded approach to detect new opportunities for our researchers.
The Maintenance Service is in charge of the maintenance and conservation of the building, of all its facilities and of the equipment. It works from the year 1991, when the Institute moved to the new building. It is also responsible for the mechanic, electronic and electric equipment, available for the Institute staff.
The Knowledge and Technology Transfer (KTT) Committee was established in July 2017. The main objectives of the Committee are defining the KTT strategy of ICMAB, reviewing the KTT actions done during a certain period of time and planning the future actions.
The Communication & Outreach Committee was formally established in April 2018, as part of one of the Severo Ochoa project objectives, to invigorate the Communication & Outreach of the Institute. The committee is formed by the C&O officer and by representatives from the different research lines and technical services of the Institute.
OBJECTIVES:
Communication: The aim of the committee is to support and collaborate on internal and external communications. This includes communication within the center and organization of events, and communication to the press and social media. It functions as a general discussion space for supporting, developing, and sharing information about communications efforts. The committee's primary method of communication is by email and by periodical meetings.
Outreach: As part of its mission, ICMAB aims to inform society about the research being conducted by its scientists in materials science, both to help citizens understand the importance of research and make informed decisions, and to encourage young people to consider scientific careers. The institute organizes or takes part in a range of dissemination activities throughout the year. These outreach activities are coordinated by the Communication & Outreach Office, with direct collaboration with researchers from all groups and technicians through the Committee. Together they also develop materials for students and teachers to help explain certain concepts and methods.
The main objectivies of the Recruitment Committee is to attract junior and senior scientists with outstanding track record on FUNMAT specialties, from Spain and abroad; foster and develop a professional career to promote excellent researchers on FUNMAT specialties.
OBJECTIVES: To disseminate the ICMAB research lines. To let people know the new researchers incorporated at ICMAB. To divulge the Scientific and Technical services available at ICMAB. To offer periodical seminars by renowned national and international researchers. To organize Training Workshops on specific subjects
ACTIVITIES: Workshops on specific subjects or techniques. Scientific Seminars. Technical Seminars on ICMAB services. Other seminars and sessions
Gender is a cross-cutting issue and is mainstreamed in all European and national projects, ensuring a more integrated approach to research and innovation. The objectives of the Gender Equality Committee are based on the strategy on gender equality of Horizon 2020: Fostering gender balance in research teams, in order to close the gaps in the participation of women. Ensuring gender balance in decision-making, in order to reach the target of 40% of the under-represented sex in panels and groups and of 50% in advisory groups. Integrating the gender dimension in research and innovation (R&I) content, helps improve the scientific quality and societal relevance of the produced knowledge, technology and/or innovation. The Gender Committee created within the Severo Ochoa project has the goal of recognizing and strengthening equal opportunities within the Institute. It organizes workshops and activities to raise awareness, and has sponsored the creation of a mailbox that anyone studying or working at ICMAB can use This email address is being protected from spambots. Formed on the June 1, 1990, at the instigation of the Director, and with the consent of the governing body, the objective of this committee is to control aspects of safety in the Institute, as well as propose to the Director and Management the necessary measures to fulfil the rules governing these matters.
The Health and Safety Committee is formed by a member representing each department, and its meetings are held at least once a year. A report is produced and submitted to the governing body.
In order to resolve daily prevention issues, a Permanent Technical Committee was created in 2019, which meets more frequently and is in direct contact with Direction and Management.

The Gas Committee was formed in 1990 during the preparation of the current building.
Objectives: Ensuring the safety of laboratories that work with gas. Take care of the security and suitability of the installations and the general gas network. Negotiate the annual prices of special gases and liquid nitrogen with the supply company..Being the link between users and supplier
